Chinook Scenic Byway Map
Traversing
Chinook Pass on the north side of Mount Rainier National Park, the Chinook
Scenic Byway offers unique beauty and awe-inspiring views. Anchored by
majestic Mount Rainier, the corridor traverses the mighty Cascade Range
between Enumclaw and Naches along State Route 410. With a diversity of
landscape from east to west, a variety of recreational opportunities are
available. To the east of Chinook Pass are talus and basaltic rock formations
in the Wenatchee National Forest and to the west are dense forests and
rich vegetative habitats in the Mt. Baker Snoqualmie National Forest.
Throughout the corridor there are many trails that lead from meadows carpeted with flowers to snow capped mountains and glaciers. Opportunities abound for hiking, climbing, snowshoeing, ski-touring, skiing, snowboarding, cycling, horseback riding, animal watching and more. Enjoy this relaxing drive while you journey through your senses. Return when your spirit needs replenishing.

Nile Valley Landslide Detour
In October 2009, a massive landslide covered a half mile section of Hwy 410 and the adjacent Naches River. The landslide altered the course of the river, flooding a number of homes and pasture land adjacent to the river. The amount of soil displaced in this huge landslide was estimated to be enough material to fill Safeco field 11 times!
The Washington State Department of Transportation staff quickly constructed a detour road, under adverse conditions, while the Yakima County relocated and designed an emergency channel to redirect the river around the landslide. The result is a five-mile long well-marked paved detour through a picturesque mountain community, with speeds reduced to 35.

The slide can be viewed from across the valley as you drive the detour. Best viewing is from an unmarked “stub road" located at milepost 108.66 on the opposite side of the river from the slide which provides good head-on views Turnaround area is limited, and larger RVs and vehicles with trailers are not recommended.
Drivers are asked to not go past the “Road Closed” barricades on the original SR 410 roadway due to safety and lack of space to turn around. This roadway is only open to residents who live near the landslide. Please be sensitive to trespass and privacy issues of residents in the area.
Work is currently (August 2010) in the design phase for building a new road at the foot of the slide.
